CASA Hearing Assessments

Aviation Medical Hearing Tests for Pilots & Air Traffic Controllers

Assessment Duration

45-60 minutes | Comprehensive CASA-compliant evaluation with detailed report for your DAME

What Are CASA Hearing Assessments?

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) requires aviation personnel to meet specific hearing standards to ensure safe flight operations. Effective communication in the cockpit and with air traffic control is essential for aviation safety.

At Hearing Care Caloundra, we provide comprehensive hearing assessments designed to support your CASA medical certification process. Our evaluations follow CASA guidelines and provide the detailed audiometric information required by Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs).

Important: This assessment provides audiometric data to support your aviation medical certification. Final certification decisions are made by CASA and your Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME).

Who Needs a CASA Hearing Assessment?

Pilots
  • Private pilots (Class 2)
  • Commercial pilots (Class 1)
  • Airline transport pilots
  • Recreational pilots
  • Student pilots
Air Traffic Controllers
  • Class 3 Medical Certificate
  • Initial certification
  • Certificate renewal
Other Personnel

CASA Hearing Standards

CASA sets specific hearing thresholds for different certificate classes. These standards help ensure aviation personnel can effectively communicate and respond to auditory cues during flight operations.

Certificate Class Hearing Requirements
Class 1 & Class 3 Pure tone audiometry thresholds must not exceed:
• 35 dB at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz
• 50 dB at 3000 Hz
Class 2 • Conversational Voice Test (CVT) at 2 metres
• If CVT is not met, an operational assessment may be considered

Note: Individual circumstances vary. Your DAME will assess your overall suitability based on comprehensive medical evaluation.

Meeting Hearing Standards

If your hearing meets CASA requirements, we provide a complete audiometric report for your DAME, audiogram documenting your hearing thresholds, and professional summary of findings.

If Standards Are Not Met

Options may include referral to an ENT specialist, hearing aid assessment if appropriate, discussion of operational assessment pathways, and guidance on next steps.

CASA HEARING ASSESSMENT FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about CASA hearing assessments for aviation personnel.

Hearing assessment frequency depends on your certificate class and age. Your DAME will advise on your specific requirements based on CASA regulations. Generally, assessments are required at initial certification and renewal periods.

Not meeting standard thresholds doesn't necessarily mean you cannot obtain certification. CASA has pathways for assessment including operational flight tests and specialist evaluations. We can discuss your options and provide appropriate referrals.

Yes, many pilots fly successfully with hearing aids. Specific requirements apply, including demonstration that hearing aids provide adequate hearing for safe flight operations. We can assess your hearing with and without aids.

Allow approximately 45-60 minutes for a comprehensive CASA hearing assessment. This includes case history, examination, and all required audiometric testing.

Yes, we provide a detailed audiometric report suitable for review by your Designated Aviation Medical Examiner. The report includes your audiogram and professional summary of findings.

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) is common among aviation personnel due to noise exposure. Having tinnitus doesn't automatically disqualify you from certification. We assess your hearing thresholds, which is what CASA evaluates.

Avoid loud noise exposure (aircraft, loud music, power tools) for at least 24 hours before your assessment if possible. This helps ensure accurate baseline measurements.
