Hearing Test in Maleny

Book a Hearing Test for Maleny Residents

Up on the Blackall Range, Maleny has a main street character all its own — the Showgrounds, the Arts Council's community hall events, and views out over the hinterland that coastal suburbs simply don't have. It's also, honestly, one of the longer trips to reach our Bulcock Street clinic in Caloundra: around 40 minutes via the winding Landsborough–Maleny Road and Steve Irwin Way. We won't dress that up as a quick errand. What we can say is that plenty of Maleny residents make the trip anyway, often as part of a wider day heading down to the coast, because they'd rather see the same independent, experienced audiometrist each visit.

The Drive Down the Range

Allow around 40 minutes via the Landsborough–Maleny Road and Steve Irwin Way — one of the longer drives we see, and a genuinely winding range road rather than a straight highway run. Some patients prefer to have a family member drive, particularly for the return leg after an appointment. Once you're off the range and into Caloundra, the clinic is on Bulcock Street with straightforward town centre parking, so the last part of the trip is easy.

The Quiet of Hinterland Living and Hearing Health

Maleny's daily soundscape — birdsong, wind through the trees, genuine rural quiet — is a big part of what draws people to the hinterland in the first place. But that same quiet can work against you when it comes to noticing hearing changes: a gradually developing hearing loss is often picked up later in a quiet environment than it would be in a noisy coastal or urban one, simply because there's less everyday noise to contrast against. It's not a reason for concern, just a genuine reason to consider a baseline test even if nothing feels obviously wrong yet, particularly if family have mentioned you're missing things at gatherings or community events.

Hearing Tests via the Hearing Services Program

We're a contracted provider under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program (HSP), meaning eligible Maleny residents — Pensioner Concession Card holders and DVA Gold or White Card holders — can access subsidised hearing assessments and related services with us. A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card doesn't qualify on its own, which trips a few people up, so bring your card along and we'll confirm eligibility electronically on the day. See our Hearing Services Program guide for the full picture.

About Your Hearing Care Professional

Linda Whittaker, a Qualified Audiometrist with over 20 years of experience and ACAud accreditation, carries out every hearing test at the clinic. She takes an unhurried, independent approach — explaining your results and options clearly, without pressure, whether you've driven five minutes or forty.

Hearing Test FAQs — Maleny

Is it worth the drive from Maleny for a hearing test?

Many hinterland residents make a day of it, combining the trip with the coast rather than treating it as a single-purpose errand.

Does hinterland acoustic environment make hearing loss harder to notice?

A genuinely quieter daily environment — birdsong, wind through trees, rural quiet — may mean changes are picked up later than in a noisier coastal or urban setting, which is worth being aware of.

Is the Maleny–Landsborough road manageable for older drivers, or should I get a lift?

It's a winding range road; some patients prefer a family member to drive rather than tackle it themselves, particularly for the return trip.
